The RMS Titanic, the largest ship in the world in 1912, struck an iceberg at 11:40
p.m. on April 14th, 1912, on her maiden voyage. The lookouts spotted the iceberg, and the rudder was ran hard to starboard and the engines full astern, but a collision could not be avoided. The iceberg struck her starboard side, causing flooding to 5 of her supposedly “watertight”compartments. The ship went down in around 3 hours, and it is considered by most to be the most tragic disaster in maritime history.
