The
Andrea Doria, an Italian cruise liner, capsized in around 11 hours after the MS
Stockholm, a Swedish Cruise Liner collided with her in heavy fog off the coast
of Nantucket. The bow of the Stockholm, which was made for breaking through ice,
sheared through the side of the Doria causing extreme flooding which cause the
ship to list (the fuel tanks, which were nearly empty as it was near the end of
the journey, flooded with seawater, which is what caused the ship to capsize).
The Doria took her final plunge around 11 hours later, with a loss of 46 lives,
most in the initial collision.
